Black Lives Matter is, understandably, the most common issue organisations are asking us about. It is not just like another government research report listing recommendations that will probably be forgotten within a few weeks. It is the voice of our diverse society demanding action, and in our view all organisations should be engaging on the subject.
We understand that the inclination for many is to say something publicly about their organisation’s stance. And for many others it is to say nothing. Our advice is simple, if you have something meaningful to say, say it, publicly. If not, don’t. More specifically
- If you are doing things to meaningfully address the issues related to inclusion and equality for black people, that’s great. We encourage you to talk publicly about it, and how it fits within your overarching BAME and Diversity strategies for your employees, consumers, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders. Encourage others to follow by talking about your experiences. The associated positive PR effect is fine if your efforts are genuine. And keep learning and developing your approaches.
- If you are struggling to know what to do, that is understandable, we know all too well that there are many complex issues to think and work through. Our expertise can help you get to work on these in meaningful and measured ways. You can also learn from other organisations about what to do, perhaps even other parts of your own organisation, or your suppliers or other stakeholders. And, of course, ask your own people to understand their views and experiences. And there are plenty of other resources you can access to aid your journey. In the meantime, be ready to be asked about it, and prepare a response statement expressing what you are planning to do about Black Lives Matter and how that fits within your overarching BAME and Diversity strategies.
